Summer Brain Drain

Summer is a great break from the everyday routines of school, but it doesn’t have to be a break from learning. “Summer Brain Drain” is a term used to describe children losing some of the knowledge they gained over the prior year in school. How can you avoid this happening to your child but still let them enjoy the long, lazy days of summer? Here are a few ideas to help:

  • Find something your child is passionate about and help them research and dig deeper into that topic. It could be learning more about their favorite animal by taking a trip to the zoo, exploring an exciting place on a family vacation, taking a kids cooking class to learn more about healthy food and their bodies. Most importantly, make it not only educational, but something fun for your child.
  • Let them use technology! There are so many wonderful, educational games and sites out there for students that will encourage learning and also allow them to have fun! Some ideas include www.starfall.com, Reading A-Z (ask your teacher for login information if already being used during school) or research some great sites on your own! The important part is setting limits, no matter what the technology choice is.
  • Read together! For younger students this might be reading to or with them. For older students it might involve reading along with them and discussing the books. This is a great way to develop deeper comprehension and conversation skills and really challenge your child’s way of thinking! Try and make connections to real life events whenever possible!
  • Incorporate learning into everyday activities. Make grocery shopping an adventure. Give your child a set amount of money and have them see how many items they can purchase at the store, or purchase ingredients for a recipe and incorporate measurement and responsibility by making it together. If your child loves sports, teach them how to calculate averages or statistics and follow it up by taking them to a game!
  • By focusing on things that keep your child’s interest but also allow them time to explore and learn, you’ll help them avoid that summer brain drain and have them ready when school starts again!
