How to Keep Students Focused This Winter

College Student Studying in Library

With the holidays a distant memory and winter fully upon us, it is time for a refresher course on how to keep students focused on homework. The limited hours of daylight combined with cooler weather can result in cabin fever and restlessness. Often when kids are supposed to be working on homework assignments and studying, the struggle to keep them on task is real.

Here are some of our favorite tips for how to keep students focused during study time at home.

Keep Them Active

Take a short break at least once an hour to get your kids up and moving. This “brain break” will allow their minds to rest and then re-focus on the task at hand. It can be as simple as jumping up and down for 30 seconds. You can also try yoga poses, playing a quick board game, or taking a short walk outside, if the temperature is tolerable.

Build Mindful Endurance

Focusing is a skill, like running and jumping, that can be improved on with practice and training. Endurance training for focus will strengthen your kid’s concentration level, processing skills, and ability to manage emotions. A couple of endurance exercises that can help improve focus in students include: dancing sequence games; mazes done for speed and accuracy; and paddle ball. Building focus endurance throughout the year can help fight the loss of focus during the colder, darker months.

Remove Distractions

Simple distractions can affect children differently. Look around your child’s study area and consider eliminating unnecessary clutter, noises, and visual stimulation. If your son or daughter is already struggling with concentration, any distraction can become an excuse to lose focus. The fewer distractions, the fewer excuses there are from focusing on the task at hand.

Utilize Smaller Assignments

Break up homework into shorter tasks. The truncated assignments should require shorter durations of focus, and also allow natural “brain breaks” in-between assignments. Kids who have difficulty with focus may even complete all the individual assignments in a shorter period than if they had attempted to complete the larger task all in one sitting.
