Avoid Summer Slide

Statistics show, on average, students’ achievement scores can decline over summer vacation by one whole month’s worth of school-year learning! This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as “Summer Slide”. So how can you keep your child on task and learning all summer long? Here are some tips and ideas for keeping your child on track all summer:

  1. Read – Set aside time every day for reading.Find something that interests your child and stock up, whether it be comics, magazines, football cards or recipes. Visit your local library or bookstore. Keep the focus on their interest, but also making sure to stay at their reading level so as not to frustrate them. Allow them to also use technology, such as reading apps or games and create a “special reading spot” either in or out of the house, somewhere bright and relaxing. And finally, check your library for local reading programs that encourage your child to read a set number of books per month.
  2. Field Trips – Museums are a great place for encouraging learning and hands on interaction. Children love the Zoo and it’s a great place to encourage deeper learning about animals and their habitats. Get outside and go hiking! Local walking trails are a great place for exploring. Have your child keep a journal of their travels for later reference.
  3. Play Board Games – There are so many fun and educational board games that can teach your child a skill without them ever realizing it! Uno, Dominoes, Mancala, Monopoly and Sequence Numbers are just a few that focus on Math. Boggle, Apples to Apples and Scrabble are great for literacy focus. If you don’t have those games accessible, most board games reinforce counting skills with dice, and literacy skills by reading the directions. Most importantly, choose a game that is fun for you and your child!
  4. Plant a Garden and Keep a Journal – Kids love watching things grow and planting a garden will not only allow them to create something, but teaches them responsibility in the process. Have them keep a daily/weekly journal to chart their progress. What a fun thing to share when they go back to school!
  5. Enroll in Summer Camp – Summer camps are a fun way to incorporate hands-on activities and also give your child a chance to meet and spend time with other kids while doing so. Some of the more popular ones include computer, science and math camps. Check with your child’s teacher to see if she has any recommendations!
